The way this story was portrayed did us a lot of justice, the normalities of being gay for Miss Lister made me want to be that truthful with myself and others about it-and she was from the 1800s! I will be searching out her diaries-they are available to read, no? I think what you have done is wonderful and am so grateful this story has been allowed to be told. I thank you very much for putting these diaries onto the screen, and I sincerely hope that because it was broadcast on the BBC this story will reach many households that are still ignorant to the LGBT community. I knew it wasnt the time period of Austens classics that bored me, it was just finding the right characters to read about. A story like this is what I have been waiting for. During those lessons, I used to find myself wishing there was a 19th century story about two women, as Mr Darcy really cant keep my attention span. I wanted to send a letter (You know like olden times) but couldnt find an address so I am sending you my appreciations over the web.įirstly, Im a 17 year old gay girl, currently studying Pride and Prejudice at college.

The Magpies is a brilliant psychological thriller. More than anything else, she wanted to forget. But even that would not erase the images from her mind: they were locked inside her, and she could only hope that time would erode them. She felt like tearing up the whole album, ripping each picture to shreds, or throwing it into the fire, watching her memories burn. The caption didn’t fit the photograph any more. She crossed out ‘Paradise’ and wrote ‘Hell’ in its place. After Jamie’s best friend is injured in a horrific accident, Jamie and Kirsty find themselves targeted by a campaign of terror.Īs they are driven to the edge of despair, Jamie vows to fight back-but he has no idea what he is really up against. They hear disturbing noises, and much worse, in the night. The other residents of their building seem friendly too, including the Newton’s, a married couple who welcome them to the building with open arms.īut then strange things start to happen. The future, in which they plan to get married and start a family, is bright. When Jamie and Kirsty move into their first home together, they are full of optimism. I run the images through a batch encoder with Irfanview to get rid of black borders on the image, rename the files, and conform them to jpg.Ħ. and bring down the number of stills to my 60-65 golden number.ĥ. The Widow and the Rogue Married off at a tender age by her greedy uncle, Lady Kathleen Langtry suffered through several years as the wife of a wealthy, but cruel man. I go through the folder again (immediately)looking at the frames on large preview and try and remove frames that replicate a certain lighting style or framing. I’m then left with usually around 80-100 really interesting frames. I view all the frames as a slideshow and I remove any frame that there are doubles of (someone might be blinking in first frame and normal in second) or remove any that seem less interesting this time around.Ĥ. So the next step is to edit, usually there might be a week or 2 between the first grab and this edit stage. This usually leaves me with around 200-250 frames per film. Depending on mood I could spend a few hours just doing the grabbingģ. I watch through the movies on VLC, usually between 3x and 4x speed while listening to podcasts, grabbing any frame that interests me. i try to keep a mix of styles.genres/directors and DP’s so I dont get bored while working.Ģ. Narration Ĭather chose a first-person narrator because she felt that novels depicting deep emotion, such as My Ántonia, were most effectively narrated by a character in the story. The name is pronounced as it would be in Czech. Jim thinks of her as his close friend, my Ántonia. The story is told by her friend Jim, who arrives there at age ten to live with his grandparents. The title refers to Ántonia, a young woman immigrant to the western prairies of the US. Cather was praised for bringing the American West to life and making it personally interesting. This novel is considered Cather's first masterpiece. The first year in the very new place leaves strong impressions on both children, affecting them for life. The novel tells the stories of an orphaned boy from Virginia, Jim Burden, and the elder daughter in a family of Bohemian immigrants, Ántonia Shimerda, who are each brought as children to be pioneers in Nebraska towards the end of the 19th century. My Ántonia ( / ˈ æ n t ə n i ə/ AN-tə-nee-ə) is a novel published in 1918 by American writer Willa Cather, considered one of her best works. I have no recollection of why I reserved it at the library other than that I read an article that I can’t now find in which the writer of the article referred to Don’t Let Me Be Lonely in a way that made me want to read it. Donald Trump leads in the polls in every early state, the Republican establishment is panicking over the rise of both Trump and Ted Cruz, and the ability of that same establishment to control the nominating process seems tenuous at best. With the Iowa caucuses less than a week away, however, there are signs of a crisis in conservatism. Starting in 2001, with Before the Storm: Barry Goldwater and the Unmaking of the American Consensus, and continuing on through Nixonland (2008) and The Invisible Bridge: The Fall of Nixon and the Rise of Reagan (2014), Perlstein has shown how the Republican Party became more and more aligned with a powerful conservative movement, moving both the party itself-and the country-to the right. Rick Perlstein has established himself as the pre-eminent historian of modern conservatism.
